Strengthening Germany–Nigeria Partnerships: From Academic Cooperation to Innovation and Impact
The visit included exchanges with leadership from Baze University and the African University of Science and Technology (AUST), two institutions that are making important contributions to Nigeria’s higher education and research landscape. Discussions focused on strengthening partnerships between Nigerian and German universities in areas of growing strategic importance, including scientific research, innovation, academic mobility, and knowledge transfer.
The meetings took place in the context of a training initiative led by the University of Koblenz, which brings together representatives of Nigerian higher education institutions to explore how innovation-oriented approaches can be more effectively integrated into teaching, research and university engagement. The programme also involved contributions from experts and partners from the University of Erfurt and others working at the intersection of higher education, innovation and skills development.
A recurring theme throughout the meetings was the importance of connecting academic excellence with innovation ecosystems. To explore this dimension further, the delegation visited Innovate Start-up Hub Abuja, where they gained insights into the hub’s activities and discussed opportunities for future cooperation. The exchange offered am impressive glimpse into Nigeria’s dynamic start-up landscape and the role universities can play in nurturing entrepreneurship and translating research into real-world solutions.
With its diverse higher education sector, rapidly evolving innovation ecosystem and young entrepreneurial population, Nigeria offers huge potential for collaboration. The visit reinforced DAAD’s commitment to building stronger bridges between the German and Nigerian higher education and innovation ecosystems.
