On 5 June 2026, Innovators and young researchers convened in Accra and pitched their ideas ‘Breaking Walls’ in science, society, and technology. This year’s competition was particularly significant, marking ten years since the Falling Walls Lab was first held in Ghana in 2016.

A resounding congratulations goes to Christiana Adofua Assah of the University for Development Studies, who won with her outstanding presentation “Breaking the Wall of Toxic Malaria Diagnosis.” By using locally available materials to produce stains for malaria diagnosis, her innovation impressed both jury and audience. She will proudly represent Ghana at the Falling Walls Lab Finale in Berlin this November. Second place went to Bridget Boamah Appiah, of Bellview Eyecare and Optical Services, with her idea on non-invasive bionic vision for the visually impaired. Joel Senyo Ahadzi of the University of Energy and Natural Resources secured third place with his AI-powered bidirectional Ghana Sign Language translation project. The Audience Award was won by Allen Kpentey of Ashesi University for his concept on affordable clean mobility.

We extend heartfelt thanks to our partners, the Delegation of German Industry and Commerce in Ghana (AHK Ghana), our distinguished jury members, and all who contributed to the success of this year’s Lab. The event not only celebrated innovation but also reaffirmed Ghana’s role in shaping solutions with global impact.

This year’s event also hosted a panel discussion under the theme “AI for Impact: Solving West Africa’s Hard Problems at Scale”. Panelists explored how AI can be harnessed to address pressing regional challenges in healthcare, education, agriculture, and governance.

Discussions emphasized that while AI offers immense opportunities, its success depends on context‑sensitive design (the African context), ethical use, and strong collaboration between researchers, policymakers, and industry. Panelists pointed the practical applications in a few of the pitches like the AI‑driven language translation tools for Ghanaian languages into sign language, predictive systems for sustainable agriculture among others. They also highlighted the importance of building local capacity, ensuring inclusivity, and creating regulatory frameworks that safeguard trust and transparency.

The session concluded with a call to action: West Africa must not only adopt AI solutions but also lead in shaping them, ensuring that innovation directly responds to the region’s most urgent needs.
